Riffing on Anton Chekhov's classic "show about nothing," The Seagull, a young woman is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wants to fight the changing of the times. In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts broken. With nowhere left to turn, the only option is to turn on each other (ntlive.com). In this brand new, hilarious, and touching piece, Zachary Cohn tears away any musty old remnants of Anton Chekhov's *The Seagull* by having all 10 characters performed by one actor. It's a robust 90 minute journey and includes a "Narrator" to manage the chaos and provide snarky commentary. Join us for this fresh treatment of one of the most popular and important plays in modern drama. You'll laugh, you'll shed a tear, you'll ask (as people have been doing for 130 years) "what is wrong with these people?!"
PLEASE NOTE: While it's a comedy, this production includes discussions about and theatricalized interpretations of bird shooting and suicide. |
OPENING MARCH 14, 2025, Barrow Group Theatre, New York, NY
Award-winning playwright E.M. Lewis tells the story of America’s relationship with guns through the prism of her own personal experiences. From a farming community in rural Oregon to the big cities of Los Angeles and New York, an actor shares Ms. Lewis’s unique perspective and true stories about America’s most dangerous pastime, with brutal honesty and poignant humor. Leaning neither right nor left, The Gun Show jumps into the middle of the gun control debate and asks, “Can we have a conversation about this?”
PLEASE NOTE: While it's mostly a comedy (until it isn't,) this production includes discussions about gun violence and suicide. |
OUR MISSION: |
Professionals creating works of relevance to the people of the Midwest, with particular attention to the voices of women and other under-represented groups.
|
TheatreMidwest strives to:
|
RADICAL HOSPITALITY |
Inspired by our colleagues at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minnesota, and encouraged by a number of other organizations around the country, we proclaimed at our inception that live theatre must be a lot more accessible to a whole lot more people. In our work, our mission, and our being we commit to removing barriers that discourage people from being our guests.
With access as our guiding principle, we work toward this goal in two main ways:
|
"MIDWEST?"In the middle. West of the East Coast (but East of the West Coast.) Our roots have taken hold in the almost-exact-middle, as did our first production, in Des Moines. The journey continues from there. |
